Alby KAL November 15, 2013

Now that it’s what I like to call “gap weather” here in Portland, it’s time to make the neckwear to fill the, you know…

I’ve been busy making a little lace accessory for moi with some of my knitting friends

If you’d like to join us – there’s an Alby KAL going on in the Chic Knits group here

We’re having lots of fun putting together Alby shawls in very pretty color combinations – I’m on my Alby #4. When I first put my colors together, I was going to use some really interesting variegated sock yarn for the body of the shawl (now slated for a slouchy beanie) but as I was knitting my border I noticed a color combo that occured with the lace against the dark indigo jeans I was wearing –

This pinged my memory – I had some left-over yarn from a 2012 beanie project and it would be perfect for a simple but dramatic pairing:

I love the look of the creamy BARE NAKE WOOL fingering (in Oatmeal) alongside the dark dark navy of the RANCO.

And there’s something about when you hit an exciting ingredient point that spurs the knitting right along and it wasn’t too much later that this happened:

If I kick it into high gear – I can wear this to Sunday brunch. hmm…

the smell of victory November 14, 2013

…I’m so close to finishing this sleeve I can smell the finish line and it smells like: Chocolate…

Am going to refresh with some nice ginger tea and get to it!

If you look closely you can see there’s a method to my sleeve marker madness:

As I knit the sleeves of my Hey Girl, I use a hanging marker through every decrease made.

Then, when I knit Sleeve #2, I remove the markers from Sleeve #1 everytime I make a decrease in Sleeve #2.

VOILA! All of a sudden, the sleeve, it is knit!

Would ya rather: cast-on a large number of sts or pick them up later?

– I always go for the pick-up because it’s really just like knitting a row that’s already there – except there is no left-hand needle…

QUE? That means you are poking the tip of your needle into already made sts instead of loops. Once you learn how to “see” those sts, it goes really fast. The pick-up ratio given will give you a very, very close number.

Pick Up & Knit…
———————————–
Here’s a couple of things I like to do:

– Do this in the morning in good light.

– Use your left index finger to run under the edge, opening it slightly to see the “sts” or holes you will pick up through.

– Poke the tip of needle into the edge to open it up every few sts to keep it flowing like this – here’s a little video…
