Oy! I’m crushed! Elizabeth I is also one of my favorite historical persons! I was so looking forward to checking out the DVD. I probably still will, though, just for the general splendor.

Good lordy, I hated The Golden Age. I actually went to see it in the theatre because I’m a big fan of QE the first, and boy, did I regret it. The first film is much better, and I second the recommendation for the Glenda Jackson series.

I’ve always loved Elizabeth, too. Just imagine growing up knowing that your dad had your mom and your third step-mom killed, your insane sister wants you dead, and most of Europe thinks you won’t live to see your twenties. TELL ME you wouldn’t be off drooling in a corner somewhere!
Glenda Jackson’s Elizabeth gave one of the best reasons behind her never marrying: I owe my life to no man’s good opinion. Tell it, sister! Although I read another excellent reason that I’d never considered: her unmarried state gave her a kind of insurance policy. Get this: if she were killed, England would be engulfed (yet again!) in bloody, murderous civil war because the Catholics and Protestants would go at each other for supremacy. In effect, “Go ahead, have me whacked. But I’m all that keeps this country from burning itself to the ground. I hope you like scorched earth – that’s all that will be left if I’m killed.” Who says history’s DULL??
Glenda Jackson is my all-time favorite Elizabeth, but Anne-Marie Duff is a close second.
Such a shame that Cate’s second turn as Elizabeth I was such a disaster.

I just get Elizabeth from Netflix and I agree…I was kind of disappointed. It wasn’t a waste of 2 hours, but didn’t blow me away either. However, I did really like the costumes – I’m pretty jealous of Cate Blanchette for getting to wear all those amazing dresses!!!! :-)
I saw it in the theatre with some friends as part of a birthday party. It was getting so ridiculous that when she delivered the line, “I want you to give me something I have not had in a long time,” we got a horrible case of the giggles and almost had to leave.
Teenagers? No. Forty-somethings.
I haven’t seen it, but I will take your warning duly in hand – it is bad for decreasing. I’ve been enjoying my “period” fixes with Netflix instant view – they’ve got the BBC with some of their yummy offerings. Perfect to knit with.
