help me, I’m a slave of SBC!!!
Mondays are my least favorite day of the week.

It’s just too hard to say good-bye to the 2-day fling that was the weekend. Two days is just long enough for me to start to think, that perhaps, I am a Lady of Leisure…

Mondays always have the slowest start and always drag to an even slower end.

I don’t require a lot of myself on Monday nights because I know I just won’t be able to pull it off. For instance, I used to be in an acapella singing group up at Old Town School of Music, but finally had to quit because, gasp, it didn’t get started until 8PM and I was a wiggly, off-key, over-vibrato’d alto by 8:15!

So it came as no surprise that I didn’t even get around to reading my email until around 7 last night. Or, should I say, attempting to read my email.

My phone line was deader than an Igor/Kilmousky mouse in MA…

No internet. No email. No funsies on the blog…

I HATE SBC! Not only did I have to wait 6 whole weeks when I moved into my place to get service established, but now, while establishing the service of my new neighbor downstairs, they cut off mine!

Living through over an hour and a half on my cell phone to get the measliest, meager, stingy, rude service has put me in a gigantic SNIT! An over-the-top don’t want to wait all day for the Serviceman Snit. A Snit of Proportions so Gigantic if SBC Spokesman TOMMY LEE JONES materialized right now before my very eyes, I’d arm wrestle him into submission until he rolled over like a limp little chihuahua kicking his tiny feet in the AIR! (Also hate those quasi-political, back-patting, self-serving HORRIBLE ADS SBC runs continuously here – HEY! -how about spending some of that advertising $$$ improving your service and training your techs>!)

So the time has come, my dear knitting friends, to lose the landline and get WIRED…

Your favorites?????

  1. okay, everyone in my (geeky tech support) office said get DSL, get DSL, get DSL. But they didn’t have it in my area (we’re a little bit in the country) and we got cable, and I love it.

But, according to the geeks (and I say that with love), DSL technology is more advanced and has more support.

  2. I’ve had both and most of the time there is very little difference that I could tell. But they say that cable can slow down if there are lots of people on at once. Good luck!

  3. I hate SBC! We had to deal with them in Texas and I won’t bore you with details but as soon as MCI came up with The Neighborhood thingy I jumped on it and cancelled SBC. I will never use SBC again, even if it means sending smoke signals. Cingular is co-owned by SBC – you can guess which cell phone provider I won’t even look at. I feel so strongly about SBC, I get ticked off when I see the ads for it in the Olympic coverage. I should probably go lay down now, I’m kinda worked up. (We’ve used cable for internet service for several years now.)

  4. I’m unclear . . . how do you feel about SBC?

I’ve had a cable modem since 1996, no foolin’. The company changed over the years and has morphed into part of Comcast. Since Comcast took it over a few years ago, I’ve had virtually NO outages and no problems whatsoever. (Knock wood.) Recently installed a wireless network at home and it works seamlessly with Comcast. I’m a cable gal all the way!

  5. I vote for cable. Comcast is pretty zippy and it should be in your neighborhood, since it’s in mine.

Ultimately, SBC controls all the DSL lines since they own the infrastructure. Other companies just lease from SBC. But they may provide better customer service.

If you want to know all the gorey details about cable vs DSL (and all the flavors of DSL) my favorite geek boy can give you some of the low-down.

  6. all of these communications companies have the absolute worst customer service imaginable, and anyone who says otherwise about any single company has just been lucky so far. cheers for giving SBC the boot! i ditched my landline three years ago in favor of a cable modem and my cell phone, and i’ve never regretted it.

  7. Ooh Ooh!! I’m with you! I HATE SBC!! I have been having nothing but trouble with them since day one! I am switching over to a cable modem with Charter, myself. I can’t wait to be free of the burden that is S…B…C.

  8. I am so with you — I HATE SBC. I hate the bait and switch charges, and the unhelpful tech support/customer service people. I haven’t yet figured out my escape plan, but I’m contemplating cable…

  9. I switched from cable to DSL a couple of years ago for 2 reasons: The cable speed would get bogged down at peak usage hours & Comcast’s customer service here SUCKED when we did have problems. We’ve not had any real problems with DSL yet & Bellsouth’s customer service has been pretty good. So, my vote goes to DSL.

  10. We have been without any land lines for almost 2 years now. We love it.
We have Adlephia. They have really been good. We have far fewer interuptions and most of those would have to be my fault and our wireless network connections.

  11. We’ve got DSL service through cyberonics combined w/a wireless modem, and life is good. I can perch on the couch with the laptop computer, the TV remote, the wireless phone, the cell phone, a snack, a bottle of water, and my faithful dog, and be entertained for hours. Get DSL.

And BTW, if you don’t have TiVo, a Sonic Care toothbrush, an IPass for the tollroads, and a start on your xmas projects, get those too!

  12. We have had Verizon DSL for several years now and love it. Their customer service is the greatest, and believe me I have put them through the wringer. They always come through for me, very patient and courteous, and then remind me to call back if they can be of further assistance. They have my vote!

  13. I have a cable modem and just love the speed. If I had to change to a slower transmission I don’t think I would like it at all..Good luck in your search…

  14. I’m with ya, I hate SBC. But, while I got my cable modem ages ago, I’m not a big fan of Comcast either. I have had some outages, have the usual nightly 7pm slowdown (sometimes to slower than 56K dialup speeds), and there been all kinds of other problems too. Husband and I both work in IT and have manned help desks in the past. I find that most of the support reps (even when my case is escalated) have no idea what they are talking about. Nothing like telling the level 2 and 3 technicians how to do their jobs. *grr*

  15. I prefer cable internet and cell only for telephone coms. Haven’t had a land line in many years. I may have to go to satellite internet when i move to the country.

  16. My parents (who live not too far from you – in Skokie!) have had Comcast cable modem for a few years. While the speed is great, they do appear to have frequent outages that can last up to several days at a time. (When I lived in NJ, I also hads a Comcast cable modem and a very similar experience.) Now in Boston, we have DSL service from a very small company (Speakeasy), and the performance has been flawless.

  17. I’ve had both SBC (gasp!!!) DSL and a cable modem (Adelphia). Both are lightening fast — you’ll wonder how you EVER got by with dial up! With either service you can get great package deals. I NEVER needed support w/ DSL it was so realiable, however I’ve found the support with the cable modem to be great, on the few occasions when I’ve needed it. I would do some research and see who has the better deal and will leave you w/ more $$ for yarn :-)
