saffron1.jpg
late late at night…

I’d like to think that the reason I’ve been really rather muddled
the last few days is because it is February. You
know, Phil,
his shadow,
all that …

Inspired by the fabulous Polly, I started a new project: Saffron, Rowan 25 by Kim Hargreaves. I’ve wanted this sweater forever and all it took was just one look at hers to get the party started. Deep in my UberStash, I found some cotton blend yarn that has been lingering for ages – it is (depending on the light source) a smoky aqua/blue. I bought it on eBay from some kind of close-out of a factory lot. It arrived in big wound-off Logs, perhaps from a super cone or something. I also bought it in smoky Olive Green (shocking).

It wasn’t too long into a sleeve (row 1 to be exact) that I flopped. oVER AND Over. This sweater has a little scalloped edge and I just couldn’t digest the instructions. It took 3 tries for it to *click* and then it was so obvious that if there was someone else in the room with me I would have been exceedingly embarrassed by the density of my brain. (And, perhaps, no not really, by the amount of VULGAR LANGUAGE that escaped my lips…)

But I wasn’t alone – the television was bringing Men’s Combined Skiing into my hut and some Skiers, in fact the top two seeds, were in some desperate straits of a much more crucial sort! Did Bode throw his yarn on the floor in a hissy fit and stamp his booted feet when he straddled a gate? Did Raich swear like a truck driver when he went OFF the Course (I’m convinced it is just too icy over there…) in the same race?

Maybe, but I couldn’t hear him from over here…

(I did hear Claudia, however. Damn, I feel your pain~!)

So when, 30 rows later, in the deep night, when I really looked at what I knit and saw LOOSE (not loose lips, ginormous GAUGE!) with the little scalloped edge facing wrong-side out, I did what any sane person would do: it was OFF with Its THREAD!

(On to smaller needles…)

  1. SAFFY! short for …. SAFFRON?

I just went and looked at that sweater in my book – me like…

You have just inspired me to go change mine once again (only 3 rows to rip :) – instead of doing that embroidery afterwards, I think I will knit in the little cross…

oooh I have lots of Rowan Denim in stash…

Are you using denim? I am skert of it…

  2. Now this is weird! That IS the same edge used in Smooch, which I also knit awhile back.

Howevva, the instructions are written differently – I don’t recall having problems knitting that edge or DID I? memories just a corner of my mind…

  3. Did you know I grew up ski racing and actually went to school with Daron Rhalves? Yup. I’m older than him and when he first came to GMVS (Ski academy) he barely weighed over 100lbs.

So there’s your random tidbit of the day!
    xo

  4. It seems to be going around. I don’t know if it’s the pressure of the Olympics, or if we all pissed off the Knitting Goddess, or what…

  5. I thought when I first read your blog entry this morning that that edge looked like Smooch! I remember having problems with that one. I don’t have a copy of Saffron to compare. I found that in my Smooch, the scallopped edge has smoothed out over time, and the scallops are not as defined…could be my choice of yarn though(not ASC). Your Saffron is looking beautiful so far!

  6. Ok, though the color is similar, you calling this new suggests that it does not belong to the lovely shawl collar on display earlier?

Have you jumped ship? Please, please, bring back the collar. The anticipation… I can’t stand it!!!

  7. Au contraire, my lady Leah – I have been a very, very good girl!

The Shawl Collar cardi is an FO and if it wasn’t such a Drab Day here in the Windy City, I could take a nice picture of it :)

  8. Everyone is “slipping” it seems. The important thing is to get back up, dust yourself off, and jump back in the game!

I ripped a few rows out myself, and had to fix a couple of naughty sts.

Congrats on the ribbi ad pic in IK, I just saw it!
