  Monday Morning Mirth

Our dear Monday Morning Mirth originated, years ago now, due to the fact that I don’t like Mondays. Seems I’m not alone in that sentiment, but in the spirit of making lemonade out of lemons, laughing seemed to be the best medicine.

Before I mangle any more metaphors, this morning, as I’m drinking my coffee, I’m also contemplating mon toilettage. It is always a choreographed affair here at Chez Chic to balance time for the cuppa, the NYTimes headliner email I devour every AM, and the managing of the hair and wardrobe, before rushing out the door to be stuck in the early AM rush hour traffic. Although I love painting my face, I am really lacking in motivation in the fine art of sculpting mon coiffure.

Not so for the Ancients!

I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately about life in the times of the early Ceasar’s and it seems that hair was just a building block in the architecture of self.

This is a 1st Century B.C. Flavian do, which I suppose, took much longer than the 10 minutes per morning I devote to my tresses…

But the question remains: wig or au naturel?!

  1. After doing ringlets for my daughter this weekend, I’d like to imagine they had wigs. But with all the indentured servants? I’m guessing au naturel. I wonder if I could get out on time with a lady in waiting. :)

  2. Slaves. Slave labor did that. Another question: I wonder what they used for setting lotion. Maybe I don’t want to know . . .

  3. 10 minutes? Ppft. That’s 8 minutes too long. Of course, you can tell that I spent 2 minutes on my hair, but I’m old enough to not care!

  4. It’s likely a bit of both, with whatever “setting lotion” used to plaster extra hair (the lady’s own, from her brush or comb, saved up for this purpose; someone else’s ditto) into the ringlets. And may I say E-ewwww. I have completly “wash ‘n wear” hair, short & naturally curly, that gets a quick comb-out after washing + a quick fluffing just before I scoot out the door. Piece o’ cake! As a consequence, I’m totally clueless with a blowdryer, curling iron, or even curlers. My darling daughter wants to wear her’s longer, and I’m useless as an instructor in these tools. Oh well…

  5. Heh. I didn’t even get two minutes in either. My hair is pretty short, so I don’t even need to brush it every morning (though I normally do).
