UNbelievably Blizzardy and WINDY!
What better weather to flash some stash!?!?!
My dear auntie from Georgia sent me some birthday bucks and what’s a girl to do?
Grab some STR, that’s what…
top, Downpour; bottom, Carbon
This is so exciting – I’ve not used the Medium Wt. stuff – any suggestions to needle size and gauge? The label suggests 8 sts on size 2 or 3 needles.
On my only other foray into STRland, I used #1’s and got 7.5 sts / 11 rows per inch using Lightweight. [Talking to Self: wasn’t paying attention, one sock is done and it’s Too Small. Hmm. I used 60 sts – should’ve used 64 – hate the sock – frog no frog – yikes.]
Garnet Dream colorway
The WTF part of this? It’s been so long since I made the initial sock (Oct. 2005), it disappeared and I recently found it in the sock drawer hiding with real pairs of socks. I was desperately needing clean ones and was so happy to see it until I figured out what it was – a single. A onsie.
And if you’ve ever been single, you know what that means. Limited invitations because maybe, sometimes, you make the wives sweat. Anybody?
I also could not remember what needles I used. Between brands, of which I currently have 3 (!) there are .25mm discrepancies between Size 1, 2, 3.
Off with its THREAD!
That’s a shame, but the upside is that after you rip it out you’ll get to knit 3 socks for the price of 2!!
(Just out of curiosity … what size is the sock?)
Hi Wanietta! How you doing?
It measures about 7.75″ around – I usually want at least 8″ around. This yarn makes a very sturdy fabric too, so it seems a little thicker (which means it seems even tighter).
I’m leaning towards #3 Addi’s for the newbies.
I have those 2 colors on my list! I’m no help in the needle size department, but I’ve heard of the single invite sort of thing. I’m married and would not hesitate to invite ANYone. From the way the papers read these days, it’s the married women we have to worry about;)
I would start with 3s. I use 1s (2.5 mm) with 64 stitches in the lightweight for my plain stockinette STR socks. Never used the mediumweight, but if I were going to, I’d start with 3s.
Have fun!
#3’s make sense to me, too. I just compared the strands side-by-side and there is quite a difference.
I use US 1.5’s and 64 sts. for that yarn and weight and it works great!
Single socks and too-small socks, girl, you do have the issues! Foot and ankle binding? Suffer for your fashion? I am sorry for your troubles.
I’d use #3’s. #2’s work just fine with the lightweight. And what’s the deal with those discrepancies anyway? We need us some needle police, I say!
Finally, how do you get your stripes so nice and stripey? Mine always some out swoopy!
OMG! How do you do it? I’m here in Chicago on business from sunny California. What a shock! I’m on the wait list for your class at the Stitching Salon tomorrow night…hope I can get in.
I’d actually use 2s if you want a firm fabric on the medium weight. At least start with 2s on the ribbing, then move to 3s. I used Addi 3s on the heavyweight and the socks fit great but are very dense.
All depends on your knitting tension. I’m neither loose nor tight with my knitting.
3’s and 2’s are great. Love that stuff, is one of those the henpecked colorway? I am dying to try out more of the new colors.
STR… Heaven!
I have some of the medium weight in my stash but haven’t actually used it yet. It doesn’t seem that thick to me though and I would probably try a size 2.
I’ve been having the same problem with my socks, and other projects – well, mostly socks. All my needle size woes (but no answers) are summarized here – hope leaving you a link is ok.

i used the medium weight for several pairs of socks and i used us2’s for 6.5 stitches/inch. anything smaller and the fabric was just too dense.
love the colors!
I’ve made 2 pair with med STR – I used #3 addi turbos and cast on 48 sts. My gauge is 7.5 st/inch.
I think a onsie is actually a stocking…you know filled with candy hanging out on the mantel. And as a single it is so used to doing the single girl dance with the wives. Because in their minds your life is debaucherous with wild abandon, it is best not to remind them…just saying.
Oh and with the thick stuff I use a 3, but I am a loose knitter…being single and all…
Definitely frog! The hinky rule applies to socks, and that thing must be hinky if you left it for so long! ;-)
I hope you will start this one over soon, because then you will get to see for yourself what a big difference a few stitches makes with STR. I ripped out a sock recently and started over with 4 fewer stitches, and I couldn’t believe my eyes–it was like a completely different project.
Ooh that darker STR yarn is just gorgeous! The sock was looking really nice, and while the frogging is never great, look at it this way – at least you found the sock =)
