DRAMA: uR doin it wrong…

Twas a happy day; a summer’s day. And most fun, a new threads day…

Out to the summer porch to take a portrait shot, with anticipation and glee, dancing the chacha in my head ala Steve Martin, all crazy like, comedy :)

ctimagesUntil. The shots were loaded and you noticed that there were greyish streaks across the photo in places.

Thinking perhaps a dirty camera lens was leaving its mark, you cleaned the lens, re-shot and re-looked. And It was still there…

So you took another picture to check.

No problem there.

So the reality is that somehow, you still haven’t learned your lesson. Trying to get some chores done, you washed the new, fabulous sweater with an older, multicolor sweater which kissed and told all over many parts of its surface. Looking closer, you see what you thought was grey was red reacting with the original blue of the cotton yarn. You’ve seen this movie before! A Tragedy, to be sure. Didn’t like it the first time; hatin’ it right now…

it does have pretty buttons…

So there was only one thing left to do.

Introduce the Robin Egg BCH to my other little friends…

New Threads FRIDAY!

Sea & Sky Cardi

After a trip to the button box and a warm soapy wash, the cardi finally hits the runway! Even though the weatherman says it’s going to be, drumroll please, 85 frickin’ degrees today (I might hide a way from it, it’s so unusual) like everyone in the Big Windy says, “If you don’t like the weather, wait 10 minutes.” OR, in this case, a few days, and then it’s back in the 60’s, and Cardi Wearin’ Time.

MODS: I made this Basic Chic Hoodie with 3/4 length sleeves and used the lace pattern all the way around for cuffs and I did a 2×2 rib instead of a hood, no buttonhholes or buttons on the pockets. Easy peasy.

Seeing it up on the mannequin, in its finished pose, it strikes a rather Oriental air. The sleeves & lace combo especially mimic robes and jackets I’ve seen on Chinese textiles. Although my photographer (moi) has lost the muse for portraits in the current crib set-up (no room) I’ll find a friend to take a picture of this modeled at some point. :)

more finishing…

Last on the agenda for the Sea & Sky cardi is POCKETS!

bch-p1000252

I like to use a lap table of sorts in the form of a cutting board (dedicated to stitching only) to do my pinning and sometimes, sewing. It keeps the surface of the piece being worked smooth and stable so I can Go Real Fast without having to constantly adjust the material. Here I am using my favorites, Corsage Pins, to anchor the pocket in place.

The pocket itself has been lightly steamed on the wrong side using an iron. You can see on the right that I left a long tail when I attached the working yarn to initially knit the pocket which is going to now come in handy as I’m going to use it to sew the pocket to the body of the sweater. In fact, if I’m not short on the yarn front, I generally leave these longish tails anywhere cast ons, join-ins or reattachments are happening, because then they can be used for seaming or reinforcing or tightening up little holes, or just weaving in, because it is a PAIN to weave in short pieces — like that one below the other tail on the right. ;p

After I smooth the top of the pocket and align it to the body of the sweater, I use its leftover cast-on tail to anchor its top to the body (bonus: also weaving in an end) by making a few duplicate stitches along the body on the right side of the pocket. Repeat on the left side.

Then, I use the long tail from above to whip stitch (in aqua above) the edge of the pocket to the body. For invisibility, I use one edge loop from a knit stitch in a rib column and one from the pocket itself. If that isn’t possible, I use the purl bumps between knit stitches on the body to sew into, always using aligned vertical stitches, or on the bottom of the pocket, aligned horizontal stitches across.

Purl bumps are cool things; they hide many a tail.

Yum. Little pockets all done waiting for a nice warm bath to seal the deal…
