  Monday Morning Mirth

What have we here?
Well, in the miasma that is the culinary world
over here @Chez Chic
it could only be one thing…

the Food Pyramid

That’s right, All Cookies All the Time. NOTHING but nothing gets one through the challenges of life like those little crispy disks. Especially these crispy disks.

They are Girl Scout Cookies. The highest food form of all.

And, as always, it’s the story behind the story that intrigues and confounds.

For these boxes (10 to begin with), all came from the same Scout. And that scout was not a Girl.

THAT Scout was the girl scout’s Dad – a co-worker who I adore and from who I was more than thrilled to buy 10 boxes of Do-si-dos (Peanut Butter Cremes -say it loud say it proud PEANUT BUTTER)!

What happened next was just a Froid of the most magnificent sort.

Now Citizens of Chez Chic love nothing more than a good Cultural Froid. That way, when we’re caught staring at our fellow man, we can take the High Road and claim to be just doing our job, m’amm, just being an anthropologist and recording those human perks for all time’s sake.

No sooner had I bought the cookies from my friend, than I observed Notices going up all over the workplace, advertising cookies from several parties. These handbills varied from type-to-type. Some were just photocopied blah [OOF girl in uniform]; others High Ink Jet Art [full color portrait of girl in First Communion Dress]!

The most amazing thing was that they were all authored by a Dad! The Cookie Sale had become A SPORT! And apparently, that throwdown was a success because as I watched the cookie forms FILL with orders, I just got outta the way [and was secretly glad I got my Do-si-dos before they ran OUT!]

  1. I got my 20 boxes yesterday!!! That is what happens when you let the hubbo help you order. That’s OK I freeze them, at least I freeze those that survive the initial feeding frenzy (sp?)!

  2. Ha, I knew there would be anotaher reason to love Bonne Marie….i couldn’t live without my girl scout cookies. I tend to buy them from the neighborhood girls who still do the old-fashioned go door-to-door bit…..then to round our our diet, the hubby orders his personal stash from work. Perfect.

  3. Oooo, you just made my day….I ordered cookies from a dad im my office several weeks ago. I’m so happy to know that the cookies are on their way!!! (BTW, I was a CampFire Girl, which was waaay cooler than the Girl Scouts, ’cause we got to wear pants with our uniforms. But the GS cookies are mighty good)

  4. Do-Si-Dos!! Yeah, baby!!

And trust the guys to turn cookie sales into a competition. Draw the line at contact competition!

  5. oh shit… now I want me some Samoas…
DAMN YOU *shakes fist* now I have to go get some chocolate crap from teh vending machine…. and reminisce about the time when Dosidoes were called Hoedowns :)

  6. I’m a Samoas girl myself–I know they don’t call them that anymore, but that’s what they are and always will be to me. ;-) And I love me some peanut butter patties too. Everyone else I know goes nuts for the Thin Mints, but I’ll take Samoas over those any day!

  7. Well, apparently I’m a H* for the dO-SI-whatevers – [wtf with the name changes anyway?] but OMG! HOW how how did I get away without one box of Samoas? WHAT are they called now?

At Chez Chic, the Peanut is King, but the Coconut is his QUEEN!

  8. Girl Scout cookies! I can’t believe we no one hit us up this year! I totally missed it! Oh well, our local troops usually set up a table at the local grocery store…

    Gotta love those Do-si-dos!!

  9. What a hoot! Our Girl Guide Cookies (yep, in Canada, they’re Guides, like in Britain) come out twice a year: the creme-filled (chocolate with vanilla filling or vanilla with vanilla) in the Spring and decadent Cholate Mint in the Fall (to tuck in the freezer for the Holiday Indulgence Season). Yum!

P.S. Does the dad who sells the most get a medal? ;-)

  10. Bradon and I have been desperately dodging those manipulative little scouts. Neither our wallets nor our waistbands really need to succumb to the siren song of cookies..but oh, those Tagalongs…

  11. Many years ago, in a land far, far away, I had to hoof it and knock on the Doors of Strangers to sell my cookies. There was no parental assist.

I hated every minute of it, but it was one of those good/bad things. It got me over a lot of my shyness and was one of those things that taught me that unpleasant things will not in fact kill you.
I know the world is stranger and more dangerous and all, but I really wonder what purpose is served by the dads turning it all into a sales competition – for themselves? Shouldn’t they at least make the kid come in and do her pitch herself?

Or am I grouchy old woman?

  12. name changes? what name changes? They’re called the same things they’ve been called for 25 odd years here on the east coast. We do get a new cookie every couple years though, and I know that some cookies aren’t available in other parts of the country.

The world (at least where cookies are involved) is no less safe than it was when I was hoofing it 25 years ago. (25!?) We’re just much more aware of it. For liability reasons, girls are no longer told to go house to house to sell, but the parents are expected (required in some service units) to sell the cookies. Some of the parents in my office bring their daughters in to take orders; those are the only cookies I order except at the stands or if a neighbor girl comes by the house (w/a parent).

  13. Ah, the Girl Scout cookie sale……brings back a happy memory of my friend Peggy and I, running the cookie sale for our town…..I talked her into it cause I wanted to see that semitrailer come down the block with all those cookies!……we separated them in the garage by troop and by scout, then went inside for some coffee…….came out again and found to our horror that SQUIRRELS had decided to come in and rip open half a dozen boxes!!!!!! Yikes!!!!

  14. Aaah… the Di-si-do… my most favorite of the rarified higher eschelon of cookiedom that is The Girl Scout Cookies. I usually order a couple boxes for eatin’, and a couple more for freezing (and future eatin’).

Unfortunately The Mister forgot exactly which kind of cookie was my ultimate favorite, so now I’m consoling myself on Tag-a-longs and Lemon Coolers. Oh, how we suffer! (munch munch munch)

  15. They’re still called Samoas–my faves when frozen. Unfrozen, I prefer Thin Mints!

Just got a couple of boxes. Probably should get some more while they’re still around.

  16. Samoas are called Caramel Delights down here (Florida). DD’s cookie sale (she’s a Senior Girl Scout) was over on 2/6, so we’re down to crumbs here.
